Phalanx Fractures

Most common injuries to the skeletal system. When injured, the whole hand might become

very painful and it may affect its function. It is more common in men than in women. 

Causes:

 Direct injury to the hand; may be due to violent sports, falling down, or even heavy machinery.

Mostly affects distal phalanx > middle phalanx > proximal phalanx

Symptoms :

o        tenderness

o        swelling

o        deformity

o        crepitus

o        usually associated with open wounds

Examination:

After history taking, your doctor will assess digital arterial or nerve injury.

In addition he will order several X-rays from different views.

Treatment:

Non-operative: buddy taping or splinting(6-10 weeks).

 

Operative: Closed reduction percutaneous pinning or Open reduction internal fixation

 

Your doctor will decide which treatment is suitable for your condition.
