Ganglion cysts:

It is the most common hand mass; mucin-filled synovial cyst caused by either trauma ,

synovial herniation, or mucoid degeneration.

Chance of having a ganglion cyst increases with the use of the joint. It affects anyone at any age,

but most commonly affects women aged between 20 and 40 years.

Symptoms :

·         Fixed soft swelling that appears or disappears suddenly or gradually , might change in size.

·         Usually not painful; you may feel mild pain when moving the affected joint ( because of the pressure effect the cyst may have on surrounding nerves )

·         Pain in the ligaments connected to the cyst associated with weakness in fingers.

Examination:

After taking your medical history , the doctor will palpate the swelling . He may press your wrist to check if the cyst presses on your arteries. The doctor may perform transillumination test to make sure of the contents of the cyst. He might ask for ultrasound or MRI .

Treatment : the doctor will decide the suitable treatment for you

·         Nonoperative

a.    Observation ( as it usually goes away by its own)

b.    Aspiration

·         Operative: surgical or endoscopic resection of the cyst .
